Marine Oil Spill Response Contingency Plans aim at reducing the risk of pollution from ships. However pollution incidents always occur and at that time, every Organisation with Port or Marina facilities must ensure that effective measures are in place to reduce or even neutralize the consequences of pollution incidents which include oil and other hazardous materials.
Thus, the need to set out on a national level and according to international bodies for Marine Environment Protection, a legal framework and requirements like the Marine Oil Spill Response Contingency Plan for pollution preparedness and response. To develop Marine Oil Spill Response Contingency Plans – whose existence and approval from local Port Authorities is mandatory-a series of tasks is required which include the following:
- Description of all Port facilities under the Operator’s responsibility accompanied by photographic illustration (Cameras and drones).
- Registration of all possible pollution scenarios that may occur and the detailed measures to be taken depending on the scenario as well as the type and extent of pollution (Tier 1, 2 or 3).
- Records of Ships and Vessels serviced at the Port facilities under the client Organisation’s responsibility.
- Description of all coastal facilities of local or national importance as well as the environmentally sensitive regions by using technically advanced photographic illustration.
- Detailed registration and relevant photographic material of the client Organisation’s anti-pollution equipment and proposal for its quantitative and qualitative improvement in accordance with current legislation.
- Analysis of all physical and chemical elements of all petroleum products used as fuel or lubricants in Ships and Boats that sail in the Organisation’s Port facilities.
- Analysis of wind and meteorological data of the region.
- Contact details of the members of the anti-pollution team of the client Organisation as well as of all the involved Bodies of Public and Private sector at local and national level.
